Whether it’s for weight management or a quick meal when out on the go, protein shakes are highly convenient. They’re nonperishable, easy to carry, and give your body the calories and nutrients it needs. They’re also a healthier and more affordable alternative to opting for fast food.

Unfortunately, the most widely available grab-and-go protein shakes in Canada are not vegan. That’s because they tend to contain dairy as a protein source. Lucky for us vegans, there are more and more non-dairy and vegan meal replacement drinks on the market.

Instead of dairy, vegan meal replacement shakes will use plant-based protein sources like soy or pea protein. They also tend to be higher in fibre, which is great if you want to feel full for longer.

The 5 Best Vegan Protein Shakes in Canada

We’ve analyzed the most popular vegan meal replacement shakes in Canada to provide you with the best options. Here they are:

Orgain Organic Vegan Protein Shake

  • 16 grams of protein per serving
  • 240 calories per serving
  • Made from organic ingredients
  • Available in chocolate and sweet vanilla bean

The Orgain Organic Vegan Protein Shake is the most popular vegan meal replacement drink in Canada. Each serving contains 240 calories, 16 grams of protein, and a mix of 25 vitamins and minerals. Its protein blend consists of a mix of pea protein and chia seed protein. For a nutritional boost, it also contains a blend of organic fruit and vegetables.

The best part about this vegan protein shake is that it’s fully organic and has a decent ingredient list. The only “difficult-to-pronounce” ingredients come from its blend of vitamins and minerals, but this is to be expected. The only potential downside worth mentioning is that the drink contains just 2 grams of fibre per serving.

Overall, the Orgain Vegan Protein Shake is an excellent choice if you want to effortlessly add some extra calories and protein to your diet.

SimplyProtein Vegan Protein Shake

  • 20 grams of protein per serving
  • 10 grams of fibre per serving
  • 200 calories per serving
  • Available in chocolate and creamy vanilla

SimplyProtein’s Ready-to-drink shake is one of our favourite vegan protein shakes. Not only is it an excellent source of protein, but it’s also rich in fibre which will help keep you feeling full for longer. Each serving is packed with 200 calories, 20 grams of protein, and 10 grams of fibre. It’s also a great source of vitamins and minerals. For example, each serving will provide you with 33% of your daily recommended iron intake.

The shake uses pea protein isolate as its protein source which, on its own, features a complete amino acid profile. It also contains a blend of fruit and vegetable extracts for an extra nutrient bunch.

Overall, if you’re looking for a tasty vegan protein shake that’s high in fibre and iron, the SimplyProtein Vegan Shake is worth trying.

Lean Body Vegan Protein Shake

  • 30 grams of protein per serving
  • 8 grams of fibre per serving
  • 280 calories per serving
  • Can also be used as a coffee creamer
  • Available in chocolate and vanilla caramel

If you’re looking for a protein-packed vegan meal replacement, Labrada’s Lean Body Plant-Based Protein Shake is for you. It contains 30 grams of protein per serving, from a mix of pea and brown rice. In addition to being protein-rich, the shake also contains good amounts of calcium and iron.

The shake is sweetened with cane sugar and stevia. Combined with 10 grams of fibre per serving, you won’t have to worry about a blood sugar spike after drinking this. The added fibre will also help keep you feeling full for longer.

Overall, if you’re looking for a high-protein vegan meal replacement that will keep you feeling full, the Lean Body Vegan Protein Shake is worth trying.

Sperri Vegan Meal Replacement Shake

  • 16 grams of protein per serving
  • 400 calories per serving
  • Made from organic ingredients
  • Available in chocolate, strawberry, and vanilla

The Sperri Complete Plant-Based Meal Replacement Drink is another option worth mentioning. While it doesn’t contain as much protein or fibre as other vegan meal replacement drinks on this list, it’s rich in vitamins and minerals and contains 400 calories per serving. It’s also one of the few organic vegan protein shakes in Canada.

In terms of protein, the drink contains 16 grams of protein per serving. While this amount isn’t as high as other drinks on this list, it’s more than enough for most people. Its protein comes from a mix of pea and hemp seeds, delivering an excellent amino acid profile.

The only real downside of the Sperri Complete Drink is that it doesn’t contain much fibre, with just 1 gram of fibre per serving. For that reason, we recommend combining this meal replacement drink with a high-fiber snack.

Soylent Vegan Meal Replacement Shake

  • 20 grams of protein per serving
  • 3 grams of BCAAs per serving
  • 400 calories per serving
  • Available in café mocha, chocolate, unflavoured, and strawberry

Costing around $5 per bottle, Soylent is the most budget-friendly vegan meal replacement drink on this list. Each serving contains 20 grams of soy-based protein and is packed with a mix of 28 vitamins and minerals. It also contains 3 grams of BCAAs which are great for reducing physical and mental fatigue

With 4 flavours to choose from, you won’t get bored with drinking the same flavour every day. They even have an unflavoured version that’s perfect for adding to cereal, smoothies, or coffee.

While it’s an affordable high-protein vegan shake, we weren’t too impressed with its ingredient list. For example, you’ll find both sunflower oil and canola oil quite high on the ingredients list. We also wish that the drink contained more than just 3 grams of fibre per serving.

How to Choose a Vegan Protein Shake?

Total Calories

When choosing a vegan meal replacement shake, it’s important to check the calorie content. Most meal replacement drinks have between 150 and 300 calories per shake. Seeing as adults need between 2,000 and 2,500 calories per day, a meal replacement drink is unlikely to sustain you in the same way that an actual meal would. This is especially true if you have an active lifestyle. For that reason, you may need to supplement your meal replacement drink with some food in order to feel satiated.

Protein Content

Regardless of whether you’re trying to build muscle mass, protein is an essential component of a meal replacement drink. It will not only give you a boost of energy, but will make you feel more full for longer. In general, you can expect to find between 15 and 20 grams of protein in a vegan meal replacement drink. If you’re highly active or athletic, you’ll need more protein than what’s available in a meal replacement drink.

Fibre Content

Fibre is another important nutrient to look out for, as it will help keep you feeling full for longer. It will also help prevent a spike in blood sugar and the eventual crash we’re all familiar with. A meal replacement drink with at least 5 grams of fibre is key, but you can find some with up to 10 grams of fibre per serving.

We like to avoid products with excess ingredients. Look for a meal replacement with 10 or fewer ingredients. Avoiding meal replacement drinks with artificial sweeteners like sucralose is also a good idea. These ingredients have been linked to higher risks for strokes and heart disease in the long term.
