Getting enough protein has never actually been a problem for vegans, but there’s always a moment where a vegan protein bar comes in handy. Protein bars are a tasty and convenient way to get a boost of energy while on-the-go or simply feeling too lazy to prepare a snack.

With more and more vegan protein bars on the market in Canada, choosing the right bar for your individual needs can be a challenge. That’s because not all protein bars are designed for the same purpose. Some protein bars are designed for a quick snack, while others contain more than enough protein for a simple snack.

Keep reading to learn more about vegan protein bars and how to choose the best vegan protein bar for your energy needs.

Not all Vegan Protein Bars Are Created Equal

Some vegan bars are designed for a quick healthy snack between meals, while others are loaded with more than enough protein necessary for the average person’s snack. Those high-protein bars are perfect for pre or post-workout snacks, breakfast on-the-go or to keep you fueled throughout a hike. To make things easier, most high-protein bars will be labelled as such. If there is no mention of protein on the label, the bar is most likely an energy bar.

Since many protein bars on the market nowadays are accidentally vegan, there are plenty of plant-based options to choose from. Non-vegan protein bars typically use dairy-derived whey protein or even insects as a protein source (no thanks!).

How to Choose The Best Vegan Protein Bar

If you’re looking for a vegan protein bar that will keep you sustained over an extended period of time, we highly recommend opting for a protein bar that’s also high in fibre and low in sugar. Many “mainstream” protein bars on the market have high amounts of added-sugar or artificial sweeteners and are low in dietary fibre.

Don’t get us wrong, a sweet vegan protein bar is totally fine if you’re looking for a quick and tasty snack. But if sustained energy is what you’re aiming for, pay equal attention to the fibre content when picking the right vegan protein bar for your needs. Fibre will help keep you from crashing an hour later.

Not all the vegan protein bars in this guide are certified vegan. This means that some may be manufactured in a facility that processes non-vegan products. The same goes for gluten and soy. If you have allergies, please look into the product’s nutrition facts before purchasing it.
