Even though getting enough protein has never been a problem for us vegans, there’s always a place in our lives for a yummy vegan protein bar. Protein bars are a fun and convenient way to get a boost of energy while on-the-go or feeling lazy. But with more and more plant-based protein bars on the market, choosing the right bar your individual needs can be a challenge. That’s because not all bars are designed for the same purpose.

Not all bars are created equal

Some vegan bars are designed for a quick healthy snack between meals, while others are loaded with more than enough protein necessary for the average person’s snack. Those high-protein bars are perfect for pre or post-workout snacks, breakfast on-the-go or to keep you fueled throughout a hike. To make things easier, most high-protein bars will be labelled as such. If there is no mention of protein on the label, the bar is most likely an energy bar.

Since many protein bars on the market nowadays are accidentally vegan, there are plenty of plant-based options to choose from. Non-vegan protein bars typically use dairy-derived whey protein or even insects as a protein source (no thanks!).

How to choose the right vegan protein bar

If you’re looking for a healthy bar that will keep you sustained over a period of time, we highly recommend going for a high-protein bar that’s also high in fiber and low in sugar. Many “mainstream” protein bars on the market have high amounts of added-sugar or artificial sweeteners and are low in dietary fiber. Don’t get us wrong, that’s totally fine if you’re looking for a quick and tasty snack. But if sustained energy is what you’re aiming for, pay equal attention to the fiber content when picking the right vegan protein bar for your needs. Fiber will help keep you from crashing an hour later.

Not all of the vegans protein bars in this guide are certified vegan. This means that some may be manufactured in a facility that produces non-vegan products. The same goes for gluten and soy. If you have an allergy to either or, please look into the product’s nutrition facts before purchasing it.
