How to make nut milk in a blender?

Ever wanted to make almond milk or cashew milk in a blender? It turns out that you can turn any nut into creamy milk using just a blender and a few basic ingredients. For best results, we recommend using a high-speed blender.

In order to make nut milk with a blender, you’ll need a few things:

  • At least 1 cup of raw nuts of choice
  • 4-5 cups of water, ideally filtered
  • 1 nut milk bag or cheesecloth
  • Optional but recommended: Sweetener and flavour of choice (ie: maple syrup, vanilla, cocoa powder, etc.)

In order to get started, soak your raw nuts overnight or for up to 8 hours in water. The nuts will expand overnight, so cover them with a few inches of water to ensure they remain submerged. The soaking process is necessary since it will soften the nuts and make them easier to blend into a creamy consistency.

Once the nuts have been soaked, place all your ingredients into a high-speed blender. Blend the ingredients on high speed for a few minutes, or until the mixture reaches a creamy and smooth consistency.

Once the mixture is sufficiently blended, it’s time to remove the pulp. In order to do so, strain the resulting mixture using a nut milk bag or cheesecloth. This step will leave you with that rich and creamy nut milk consistency you’re looking for.

How do nut milk makers work?

Most nut milk makers use steam to soften the nuts. They’ll have a built-in blender that turns the nuts into a silky consistency before expelling the mixture through a very fine strainer. The result will be rich and creamy nut milk. More high-end nut milk makers will have a self-cleaning function that simplifies the cleaning process.

What are the downsides of nut milk makers?

Here are the main downsides of nut milk makers:

  • Can be relatively expensive to buy
  • Resulting vegan milk will not be fortified
  • Takes up extra space in the kitchen
  • Some machines require pre-soaking ingredients
